Google Smartwatch now just a month away from production

The often leaked and rumored Google smartwatch that supposedly runs Google Now is a lot more real and a lot further along in the process of being made than we expected. The Wall Street Journal, one of the first publications to report on this device, says they now have information that the watch is in “late-stage development” and “could be ready for mass production within months.”

In addition to this shaky timetable, WSJ also reiterated that this watch’s capabilities would be centered around Google Now and syncing with your phone or tablet throughout the day. Apparently Google has been hard at work on reducing power consumption so it would not need to be charged very often. Other than that, this new report had little to share.

We heard from our sources a while back that we could possibly see this watch, codenamed “Gem,” launch with the Nexus 5, but it seemed pretty unlikely. This report confirms that it might launch a little while after the Nexus 5.

Android 4 4 Google Play Games design leaks!

We can expect to see the next version of the Android operating system officially released at some point before the end of this month at least for Nexus owners, and today we have an Android 4.4 KitKat Google Play Games design that is nice.

Not an over lot is currently known about the Android 4.4 update, and it seems as if the new firmware is going to just be a minor refresh of the operating system. The image you can see on this page is one of many by Nikolai Prettner, which is his vision of what a new gaming service could be like if it was integrated into the new Android OS.

This design for Google Play Games offers a more playful look while being more intricate with a flatter interface and a whole host of new features for the Android gamer. The designer doesn’t feel that the current Google Play Games doesn’t have enough for the serious gamer.

He mentions that he has to go into the Google Play Store to view leaderboards or to see game recommendations, but this design has a user profile summary that has a side column for viewing a profile picture, game achievements, number of games that a user plays, and how other users have rated you.

Google confirms October 24 night out with Google Play event

It looks like Google has begun sending out some invitations. The event is set to take place next week, on October 24th and in New York City. The catch is, while we are hoping to see the Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 Kit Kat — this event appears focused on Google Play. In fact, the announcement mentions a “night out with Google Play” with further talk of music, movies, games and a special performance.


Sadly, that special performance isn’t specifically listed as being Nexus 5 or Kit Kat related. To that point, it was said the special guest will be Capital Cities. Anyway, as we often see with these types of event invites, the details are light and that leads to some speculation. Or in this case, the hope the Nexus 5 is made official.
Touching on the bit about this being “a night out with Google Play event” and there is potential to see the Nexus 5 and Kit Kat. After all, as we saw back in July with the ‘Breakfast with Sundar’ event, the name didn’t exactly spill all the details. That is to say this seems to fit the pattern we saw in July — a mysterious title and an announcement.
But again, all we can say for certain is this event will be focused on Google Play. While we hope this not be the case, it could have nothing to do with Nexus or Kit Kat. That all being said, one thing we can say for sure, there will certainly be one difference compared to the July event — Hugo Barra will not be unveiling the Nexus 5 as he did with the Nexus 7.
